Meant To Be
1998
Mary lost her ma and pa, she was bounced from home to home
Her broken dreams and tattered heart were left alone to roam
One Indian summer she met Johnny out by Chelsea Lake
Later that year she slipped off her skirt and they made that big mistake
So they held the sacred ceremony in the chapel on the hill
Mary convinced herself that it was right, held her soul against its will
Johnny built Mary a house of cards, swore it’d never fall
But the tidal waves of tension pushed and pulled at every wall
One autumn day, Mary went out walking and slipped into a stream
She realized the water was warm for it was the river of dreams
She didn’t fight the driving current; she embraced its forceful flow
The fear in her heart was a heavy rock so she had to let it go
She came upon a passionate man who took away her pain
Mary swore to the angels high above, in his arms she would remain
But along the shore, she caught a glimpse of Johnny and baby Jim
She needed to have her only son but she knew he couldn’t swim
Johnny threw a rope of empty promises and Mary struggled against his lies
Eventually she let him pull her in when her gaze met little Jim’s eyes
Mary found herself in that same dark house staring off into space
Unable to shake that troublesome feeling of being out of place
On warm summer nights she goes down to the strand and stares out across the sea
With the undying hope of one day returning to her dream not meant to be
